Sorbonne Junior Council ready to receive the Olympic flag, signing the handover between the Tokyo and Paris 2024 Games

Pierre de Coubertin decided to dedicate his life to « internationalising » sport in the service of peace, by re-establishing the Olympic Games of Greek antiquity and giving them a global dimension. A humanist and educator, he saw team sport as a means of instilling cohesion and discipline in young people.
Games on a global scale
On 25 November 1892, he took advantage of the 5th anniversary of the USFSA to organise a first meeting in the large amphitheatre of the Sorbonne. The theme was « physical exercise in the modern world ». In front of many personalities, Coubertin declared for the first time publicly his great project: that of « re-establishing the Olympic Games ». It was a question, he specified, of « Games on a world scale, Games open to all, to all countries, to all races, to all religions ». But his project left the audience perplexed.

Pierre de Coubertin continued to campaign for sports internationalism and two years later, still in the name of the USFSA, convened the « International Congress of Athletic Renewal ». The theme was a unifying one: the question of amateurism. Once again, two thousand guests and 79 official delegates representing 13 countries (France, Australia, Belgium, Bohemia, Spain, the United States, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia and Sweden) gathered in the large amphitheatre of the Sorbonne from 18 to 23 June 1894. But this time, Coubertin’s project won over the participants.

Re-establishing the Olympic Games on the basis of modern life

On Saturday 23 June 1894, after five days of work by the various commissions, « the re-establishment of the Olympic Games on a basis consistent with modern life » was unanimously approved. The quadrennial periodicity was adopted.
